POLITICS & DIPLOMACY: Digging in its heels over Bolivia

The government led by President Michelle Bachelet has presented a formal challenge to the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague, which is considering a case filed in April 2013 by the Bolivian government led by President Evo Morales over Bolivia’s historic claim for sovereign access to the Pacific Ocean, lost to Chile in the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). Chile’s move, which will hold up the ICJ process, is not entirely a surprise, and is in line with remarks made by Bachelet’s predecessor Sebastián Piñera (2010-2014) at the start of this year.
