VENEZUELA-COLOMBIA: Maduro closes border to curb smuggling

The government of Venezuela has been claiming almost instant success for a ‘shock plan against smuggling’ announced by President Nicolás Maduro on 8 August, which involved closing the borders with Colombia during night hours and deploying 17,000 soldiers along the 2,219 kilometres of land border areas of four states — Zulia, Táchira, Apure and Amazonas. Maduro’s announcement had come a week after his meeting in Cartagena, Colombia, with his peer Juan Manuel Santos, in which they had agreed on joint action against smuggling.
