Eight people have been charged with crimes linked to the attacks on two buses carrying supporters of Nicaragua’s ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) from the capital to the western department of Matagalpa on 19 July – the anniversary of the overthrow of the Somoza dictatorship (1936-1979). Nearly two months on the police have yet to clarify the motives for the attack which left five dead and 19 wounded - a rare incident of apparent political violence in an otherwise peaceful country.
