Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet has announced plans for a parliamentary motion to repeal the 1978 amnesty law passed under the dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). She made the announcement on the 41st anniversary of the 11 September military coup that swept Pinochet to power. The amnesty law ceded impunity to all individuals potentially suspected of human rights violations between 11 September 1973 and 10 March 1978, the period during which much of the Pinochet-era violence occurred. Bachelet’s announcement has not been universally welcomed, particularly by the conservative Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI), the senior party in the opposition Alianza por Chile.End of preview - This article contains approximately 442 words.
