MEXICO: Iguala reignites deeper frustration over impunity
Behind the outrage over the Iguala massacre is an undercurrent of frustration at the much broader unsolved issue of Mexico’s disappeared and the impunity that has fostered it. The administration led by President Enrique Peña Nieto has been strongly criticised by the Inter-American Human Rights Commission for having ignored norms regarding forced disappearances — and at home it has been accused of having deliberately granted its predecessor a ‘clean slate’ in exchange for the support needed in congress for the economic reforms it has presented as the hallmark of a new era.
