COLOMBIA: Questions after Farc’s capture and release of a general

For the better part of a fortnight the seizure of General Rubén Darío Alzate by the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) and the suspension of the Havana peace talks by President Juan Manuel Santos created considerable uncertainty about the prospects of the Colombian peace process — fed by a wave of speculation about the reasons for this episode. The general’s release on 30 November has eased much of the anxiety about the negotiations (Santos had promised that they would resume as soon as he was freed) but questions remain unanswered about what lay behind the events.
