REGION: Another US-Centam summit disappoints

In Washington DC in November, US Vice President Joe Biden met the three presidents of Central America’s ‘Northern Triangle’ – Guatemala’s Otto Pérez Molina, El Salvador’s Salvador Sánchez Cerén and Honduran leader Juan Orlando Hernández. The meeting was aimed at addressing the crisis surrounding the mass arrival at southern US borders of ‘unaccompanied alien children’ (UAC), which made international headlines earlier in the year [RC-14-08]. The plan was to unveil a new regional development plan aimed at addressing the root causes of the crisis. However, as was the case with a previous meeting between the three leaders and US President Barack Obama (in July), little of real substance emerged.
