In the end it wasn’t the unpopular ministers of education (Nicolás Eyzaguirre) or transport (Andrés Gómez Lobo) to become the first cabinet casualties in the new centre-left Nuevo Mayoría government led by President Michelle Bachelet, which took office in March 2014. Rather it was the health minister, Helia Molina, who was forced to quit on 30 December after making ill-judged remarks regarding abortion, an issue that remains highly contentious in Chile and is exposing divisions within the ruling coalition.
