PMDB assumes the reins of congress, adding to the pressure on Rousseff

The centrist Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB), the government’s main coalition partner, has inflicted a humiliating defeat on President Dilma Rousseff’s ruling left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), snatching the presidency of the lower chamber of Brazil’s federal congress and breaking a longstanding agreement between the two allies to alternate the position. As expected, the PMDB has also retained the senate presidency for the coming year, leaving the PT without any representation on the congressional governing board ahead of what looks to be a difficult period ahead for the government.
