EL SALVADOR: Confusing public perceptions

In late February, Raúl Mijango, one of the mediators of the 2013 ‘truce’ between the gangs known as ‘maras’, announced that the gangs had agreed days earlier to a new truce. The government and the ruling Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) disavowed any involvement with this, and reiterated that they were not negotiating with the gangs. The Salvadorean public is confused.
