INE struggles to inspire opposition confidence

Mexico’s newly created national electoral institute (INE) is having difficulties in convincing the country’s opposition parties that it is up to the task of ensuring that the 7 June midterm federal legislative, state and municipal elections are transparent and fair. After voicing concerns over the preparations for the elections, opposition parties walked out of the INE’s February general council meeting, vowing not to return to until their grievances are addressed.
