Major corruption crackdown in Guatemala

Development: On 16 April the United Nations (UN)-backed International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig) and Guatemala’s attorney general (AG)’s office announced the arrest of Alvaro Omar Franco Chacón, the head of the tax agency (Superintendencia de Administración Tributaria [SAT]), along with a former SAT director, Carlos Enrique Muñoz Roldán (2013-2015), and 19 others on charges of tax fraud and of being part of a contraband ring.
