GUATEMALA: Pérez Molina agrees to extend CICIG’s mandate

After weeks of vacillating aloud about the convenience of extending for a fourth time the mandate of the UN-backed International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG in the Spanish acronym), President Otto Pérez Molina announced on 23 April that he would be requesting an extension for another two years ‘as soon as possible’ because the government’s aim is to continue the task of ‘cleansing the different structures’ in the country.
