Congress gets busy before recess
The 62nd session of the national congress closed on 30 April, ahead of the 7 June federal legislative, state and local midterm elections, which will see the renewal of the entire 500-seat federal chamber of deputies. Ahead of going into recess (until September), the legislature approved a flurry of initiatives, including anti-corruption measures and new laws in support of human rights. The three leading political forces - the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), the right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) and the left-wing opposition Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) – while increasingly at odds in the run up to the midterms, also had political-electoral motives to push through this particular legislation.
