POLITICS: Tía María conflict continues to besiege Humala

Protests against the Tía María copper mining project continue to rage in Peru’s southern region of Arequipa. Following the death of a protestor in violent clashes with the police [RA-15-04], the situation has deteriorated further, with the violence spreading, claiming more victims. Problematically for the government led by President Ollanta Humala, support for the conflict is growing; further eroding Humala’s weak support and making it harder for the government to effectively mediate in the conflict.
