Peña Nieto visits France

The escape of the drug kingpin, Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera, may have created turmoil in Mexico, but President Enrique Peña Nieto went ahead with a scheduled official visit to France. Peña Nieto’s decision to assume the role of statesman and go ahead with his planned trip in the midst of the security crisis at home proved controversial. Improving diplomatic relations with France has been a key objective for Mexico, however, and Peña Nieto signed over 60 bilateral cooperation agreements with France during his five-day visit.
