Uruguay’s umbrella trade union, Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores-Convención Nacional de Trabajadores (PIT-CNT), staged a general strike on 6 August to pressurise the government of President Tabaré Vázquez over salary demands. It was the first 24-hour general strike called by the PIT-CNT since August 2008, during Vázquez’s first term (2005-2010). The trade union does not feel that enough is being done for the country’s lowest wage earners and, crucially, it objects to the government’s proposed salary increases for collective tripartite salary negotiations, involving the government, employers and employees.
