President Danilo Medina has made two significant changes as he positions himself for re-election in May 2016. Medina dismissed the head of the police force, Major General Manuel Castro Castillo, in the midst of rising crime and appointed Major General Nelson Peguero Paredes in his place. Then he appointed two members of the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), previously the main opposition,
to official positions.
