POLITICS: Doe Run conflict resurfaces

The conflict surrounding the mining operations of the bankrupt US mining firm, Doe Run Resources Perú, resurfaced in early August, with the local community in the Andean city of La Oroya, in the central Junín Region, launching a new protest campaign that swiftly descended into violence. Mining conflicts have dogged the government led by President Ollanta Humala since it came to power in 2011, to the point of exacerbating the country’s current economic slowdown, which began with the fall in global mining prices.
