CHILE: ‘Special measures’ against violence in Araucanía

The Chilean government has decided to adopt special preventive measures against the torching of trucks by suspected Mapuche activists in the Araucanía region, and has appointed a special prosecutor to handle all such cases, applying the state security law instead of persisting in the use of the antiterrorist law. This policy shift came in response to yet another such attack immediately after a caravan of truckers had turned up in Santiago to demand actions against what they described as a ‘terrorist situation.’
