Jaime ‘El Bronco’ Rodríguez Calderón was by far the most prominent of the independent candidates to win election last June, but it is the work of another successful independent that could have the most-lasting impact on Mexican politics. Days before Rodríguez was sworn in as Mexico’s first independent state governor in Nuevo León on 4 October, the first independent candidate to win a seat in the federal lower chamber of congress in June’s concurrent congressional elections tabled a proposal to deepen the 2014 electoral law that allowed independents to run for office.
