Guatemala’s Morales takes centre stage

In line with poll predictions, the well-known local actor, comedian and political neophyte, Jimmy Morales, of the small conservative Frente de Convergencia Nacional (FCN-Nación) soundly defeated former First Lady Sandra Torres of the Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) in the 25 October presidential run-off. Given that the public backlash against corruption proved key to his victory, Morales - whose campaign slogan was “Not Corrupt, Not a Thief” – has been quick to pledge a continued crackdown on corruption. With his lack of political experience and policy offerings already questioned by local think tanks, how far Morales – whose FCN-Nación will have just 13 seats in the incoming 158-member unicameral legislature - will be able to achieve this remains to be seen.
