DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: ‘Air Cocaine’ case threatens to upset relations with France

The case of two French airplane pilots that manged to escape from the Dominican Republic (DR) after being handed down a 20-year prison sentence for drug trafficking has incited international controversy and is threatening to impact bilateral relations with France. After the two men appeared in France, French authorities rejected out-of-hand the possibility that they might be extradited back to the Caribbean country to serve their sentences. This has led the Dominican officials to accuse the French government of aiding the fugitives in their dramatic escape.
