POLITICS: On edge ahead of 6-D

Polls suggest that Venezuela’s opposition coalition, Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD), is on course to win control of the unicameral national assembly in the 6 December mid-term legislative elections. An obviously rigged result almost certainly would lead to fresh social unrest and violence. With this in mind, and in order to avoid international opprobrium, the radical left-wing government led by President Nicolás Maduro appears to be aiming first and foremost to limit the MUD gains to a simple majority.
