DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Judiciary in crisis over corruption allegations

The Dominican Republic (DR)’s national judiciary is facing a major crisis. In mid-November, the attorney general’s office presented formal corruption charges against five magistrates, accusing them of forming part of a ring which manipulated judicial processes in exchange for cash. The mushrooming scandal is once again stoking concerns about the spread of official corruption and has raised some uncomfortable questions about the commitment by the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) government, led by President Danilo Medina, to combating corruption. This could emerge as a key campaign issue ahead of next year’s general elections.
