PANAMA: Fresh transparency concerns over Canal expansion project

A group of unions representing workers on the Panama Canal are demanding an “independent” external audit of construction work on the Canal’s third set of locks – the biggest project under the US$5.3bn Canal expansion plan. The doubts signify the latest setback to the expansion project ahead of its completion date now scheduled for April 2016 (pushed back from October 2014 following a dispute in late 2013 with the multinational consortium Grupo Unidos por el Canal [GUPC], in charge of constructing the third set of locks).
