The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, made headlines on 15 December with an announcement that National Guard troops would remain posted along the border with Mexico and that patrolling would be intensified on land, in the air and on the Rio Grande (Río Bravo to the Mexicans). The decision was ostensibly taken in response to the publication by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) of figures showing that in October and November the number of unaccompanied children crossing the border had risen to 10,595, or about twice as many as in the same months a year earlier.
