EL SALVADOR: Violence reaches an all-time peak in 2015

Even after allowing for a fall in the number of homicides reported in the last two months of the year, the level of violence this year has already overshot the averages recorded during El Salvador’s 12 years of internal conflict, and the homicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants has already reached its highest level on record. Government ministers have said that the gangs known as maras have grown, that their attempts to corrupt and infiltrate the security services have multiplied, and that drug trafficking has increased.
