ECONOMIC OVERVIEW: URUGUAY

Uruguay’s exports totalled US$8.97bn in 2015, a decline of 11.6% on the previous year, according to Uruguay XXI, the investment and export promotion agency. This is the first time total exports have fallen since 2009 when the international financial crisis struck. Uruguay XXI said the result was “foreseeable” given a series of adverse external developments all striking simultaneously: a further fall in commodity prices; the Chinese slowdown; Argentina’s stagnation and protectionism; and Brazil’s recession.
