PERU POLITICS & ECONOMY: Campaign kicks off

With less than three months until the 10 April elections, pollsters CPI now put César Acuña, the populist former president of the La Libertad region, in second place in Peru’s presidential race, dislodging the conservative former prime minister Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2005-2006). Acuña, however, whose political career has long been shadowed by allegations of financial corruption, risks being thrown out of the race after it has been suggested that he plagiarised his doctoral thesis at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, one of Spain’s most leading universities. The allegation is all the more embarrassing given that Acuña has made a thriving business career in the private university sector in Peru.
