GUYANA: Granger moves fast to defuse prison crisis

On 3 March, 17 prisoners died following rioting and a fire at Georgetown’s Camp Street prison. After an initial pause for thought, on 7 March the opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) rounded on the APNU-AFC (A Partnership for National Unity-Alliance for Change) government and called for the immediate dismissal of Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan. It is unlikely, however, that the opposition will gain much traction on this issue.
