COLOMBIA: Fears of Bacrimpolítica

Colombia’s senate has been hit by scandal this month. The discovery in early April of bags filled with cash inside a car registered to the senate has produced fears that the country’s increasingly powerful emerging criminal organisations (Bacrims) are trying to buy influence in the national legislature. With Colombia still recovering from the ‘parapolitics’ scandal that exposed the links that the country’s right-wing paramilitary groups were able to establish with national legislators a few years ago, the suspected attempt by the Bacrims to infiltrate the senate is seen as serious threat - not least because of late Bacrims have emerged as a major security threat which could even become the main threat as the government continues to advance towards a peace deal with the country’s leftist guerrilla groups.
