On 20 May Susanna Malcorra, Argentina’s foreign minister, was formally nominated by President Mauricio Macri as a candidate to become the next United Nations (UN) Secretary General. Malcorra served as chef de cabinet to the incumbent UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, before assuming her present position last December. She would be the first female secretary general since the UN was created in 1945. Interviews will take place in June with a view to making an appointment in September to replace Ban in January 2017. But the decision to nominate Malcorra has left Argentina open to the accusation that it is playing its foreign policy hand extremely cautiously ahead of a decision on the appointment, particularly as regards Venezuela.End of preview - This article contains approximately 765 words.
