ECUADOR: Mining its potential

The cash-strapped left-wing government led by President Rafael Correa is pushing ahead with efforts to develop a mining sector. On 23 May, the new mining ministry, which was created 18 months ago, began a process to allocate new concessions for the first time in eight years, as part of ambitious plans to attract US$600m in mining exploration investment this year, from just US$26m in 2015.
