First contraction in three years

Amid still-sluggish exports to the US and indications that domestic demand is cooling, Mexico’s economy looks to have contracted for the first time in three years in the second quarter, following a positive bounce in the first quarter. Weakening domestic demand and some price pressures will further weigh on public support for the government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto, which is struggling to deliver the promised economic benefits of its structural economic reforms.
