Brazil’s federal senate has voted to indict the suspended president, Dilma Rousseff, on charges of fiscal malfeasance, paving the way for an impeachment trial. If nothing changes, Rousseff will be tried by the senate on 25 August, in a session overseen by the president of the supreme court (STF), Ricardo Lewandowski. The proceedings, however, are becoming increasingly influenced by the upcoming municipal elections due in early October, not least with federal legislators wrestling for government funds to boost the electoral chances of their protégées.
