Fears that Islamic State (IS – also referred to as ISIS or Daesh) was seeking to target the Rio Olympic Games, and/or to become more active in Latin America and the Caribbean, were heightened in July when Brazilian police announced they had arrested ten suspects and issued two further arrest warrants for members of a local group calling itself Ansar al-Khilafah (Defenders of Sharia). Members of the group were said to have been trying to make contact with IS and to acquire weaponry. Although justice minister Alexandre Moraes described them as “absolute amateurs” who were “ill prepared” to launch an attack, the development focused attention on the security risk posed by IS activity in the region.
