Zika cases surge in Manabí

The number of cases of Zika virus in Ecuador has reached 1,805, according to a report by the health ministry released on 11 August. Cases have been recorded in exactly half of the country’s 24 provinces, but the overwhelming majority come from the north-western coastal province of Manabí, with 1,507 cases in total. Neighbouring Esmeraldas was a distant second with 152 cases. Both provinces are low-lying but, crucially, they were also the most affected by the devastating earthquake that struck last April.
