Paraguay: EPP makes another bold show of strength

Eight Paraguayan soldiers were killed in an ambush attributed to the self-proclaimed Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo (EPP) insurgent armed group. The 27 August attack was the deadliest single attack by the EPP against the security forces since the emergence of the armed group in 2008. Consequently, there is now heightened concern that despite the deployment in 2013 of a large military-police task force (FTC) to combat the EPP in the north of the country, the government led by President Horacio Cartes has failed to reduce the threat to national security posed by the EPP let alone defeat it, as Cartes pledged to do.
