Morales clamps down on mining cooperatives

At the start of this month, the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government led by President Evo Morales issued a series of decrees aimed at better regulating the mining cooperatives sector. The move followed unrest which began last month by the national confederation of mining cooperatives (Fencomin) [RA-16-08] over their various demands. The unrest made local and international headlines after it turned deadly, resulting in the brutal murder of Bolivia’s deputy interior minister, Rodolfo Illanes, and five miners.
