Cyanide leak fuels controversy

Just six months after stumping up a hefty fine in relation to the leaking of a water solution containing cyanide at its Argentine gold mine, the Canadian mining giant Barrick Gold was back in the news for another leak at the Veladero mine, located in Argentina’s north-western province of San Juan. Local residents, and several prominent politicians, accused Barrick of negligence, and operations at the mine were suspended by provincial authorities on 15 September. But operations recommenced on 4 October, just three weeks after their suspension, amid fresh protests by residents. Although the federal environment ministry is taking legal action, some members of the political opposition are muttering that the government led by President Mauricio Macri is more concerned about foreign investors than Argentine nationals.
