Brazil: Fallout between rival gangs sparks surge in prison riots

While clashes in Brazil’s prisons are far more frequent than the police might like to admit, this month saw extreme levels of violence in two Amazonian states, killing at least 18 people. Officials say both riots were caused by a rift between São Paulo-based drug gang Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and their rivals in Rio de Janeiro, Comando Vermelho (CV).
