Minustah’s mandate extended as Haiti faces new humanitarian crisis

This month the United Nations (UN) Security Council (UNSC) voted to extend the mandate of the UN Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (Minustah) for a further six months. Approved on 13 October, the move is in line with recommendations made by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the end of August. At the time Ban cited the institutional crisis (and associated security concerns) triggered by the failure to conclude the electoral process after the October 2015 presidential first round was cancelled amid widespread allegations of fraud. These calls have since intensified due to the impact of hurricane ‘Matthew’, which made landfall in Haiti on 4 October, resulting in what UN officials have described as the “largest humanitarian event” in Haiti since the devastating January 2010 earthquake.
