During a conference on Science, Innovation and Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) held in Costa Rica’s capital San José last month, the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Eclac) released a report entitled
The State of Broadband in Latin America and the Caribbean. The report found that overall in Latin America and the Caribbean, Internet use was up 20% between 2010 and 2015, equivalent to 55% of inhabitants in 2015. All the Andean countries fall into the category of 15%-45% of total households with Internet access. Yet the report revealed varying levels of internet penetration across the region based on factors such as location, income and age. It also identified issues linked to internet quality, speed and differences according to geographic location and socioeconomic situation.
