DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Promoting transparency with EU assistance

The European Union (EU) has pledged to provide financial assistance to a series of new government transparency programmes being implemented in the Dominican Republic (DR) by the administration led by President Danilo Medina. The assistance is a political boon for Medina, who has pledged to redouble efforts to tackle government corruption following his re-election in May. The financial support should ensure that the programmes are fully implemented. It also means that the Medina administration will not be able to use lack of funding as an excuse if the programmes ultimately prove to be unsuccessful.
