Mexico: Clash over crime statistics

Understanding crime statistics and identifying trends is always a difficult task. The Mexican government has tended to give the numbers a positive spin, while independent researchers and the political opposition have taken a much more sombre view. At the beginning of November both sides of the argument were presented at a security conference, with the pessimistic view coming from María Elena Morera, president of lobby group Causa en Común, while the more optimistic view was put by President Enrique Peña Nieto.
