Venezuela: Political detainees a major stumbling block to latest dialogue

As Venezuela’s opposition leader Leopoldo López marked 1,000 days in the Ramo Verde military prison outside Caracas, the families of over 100 other political detainees sought to refocus international attention on their plight. But despite pressure from the Vatican, the US government and even the influential left-wing former president of Uruguay José Mujica (2010-2015), the government led by President Nicolás Maduro is sticking to a hard line. It says there are no ‘political prisoners’ in Venezuela, just imprisoned politicians, charged with common crimes.
