COSTA RICA: A fourth inter-oceanic canal?
Costa Rica’s public works and transport ministry confirmed on 14 November that it had received a proposal from a private consortium concerning the construction of an inter-oceanic canal through the north of the country. The project was first proposed in 1988 by Óscar Hütt Gil, an architect who has worked on the Panama Canal, but it has never come to fruition. The dry canal would link three new ports: a sea port on the Caribbean coast at Parismina in Limón province on the Atlantic coast; an inland port in San Carlos in Alajuela province; and a sea port on the Pacific coast in Santa Elena, in Guanacaste province. The project is projected to cost US$16bn.
