The governments of Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay have agreed to “consolidate and strengthen” their joint efforts to combat trans-national crimes in their respective borders areas. Unlike previous occasions on which such commitments have been made, the increase in trans-national criminal activity in the area and the growing political affinity between these governments – in particular the members of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) regional trade bloc – provides optimism that this time around it will produce concrete measures and deliver results.
