EL SALVADOR: Funes makes a new ally

Less than a month since President Mauricio Funes' historic trip to Cuba, the first ever trip by a Salvadorean foreign minister to the Kremlin. The addition of El Salvador to the growing list of Russian allies in Latin America is once again likely to raise eyebrows among the vehemently pro-US opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena). However, it provided the latest opportunity for Funes to reiterate his intention of ruling in the national interest (on this occasion with the aim of boosting trade) and pursuing policies based on “pragmatism" rather than “ideology".
